UEL: Akanbi, Iyayi on song as FC Sheriff Spank Uzoho’s Omonia Nicosia

The 2022/23 UEFA Europa League opening match day produced some shocking results the king of them all being the 1-0 win of Sadiq Umar’s Real Sociedad over Manchester United at Old Trafford, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.

Iyayi Believe Atiemwen and Rasheed Akanbi scored a goal each as FC Sheriff defeated Francis Uzoho’s Omonia Nicosia 3-0 away from home. Akanbi scored the game’s first goal in the 2nd minutes of kickoff with Fabiano in goal for Omonia.

Uzoho was brought in to replace Fabiano at the start of the second half but conceded from the spot against Atiemwen in the 55th minute. He became helpless again in the 76th minute when Diop made it 3 for the visitors.

Coincidentally, both Atiemwen and Akanbi got into the referee’s caution book.

Sadiq Umar featured only for the first 45 minute before getting subbed off during the break. The Super Eagles striker struggled to before his substitution but his team eventually carried the day, beating Manchester United at Old Trafford by a lone goal.

Victor Olatunji started for AEK Larnaca in thier opening day 2-1 defeat at home to Rennes. He was substituted in the 80th minutes.

Victor Boniface registered an assist to his name as Union Saint-Gilloise shock Union Berlin in Germany by a lone goal. The Nigerian was on for 82 minutes.

Moses Simon came off the bench and was on only for 23 minutes as Nantes kicked off thier camping with a 2-1 win against Olympiacos.

Not too bad a start for Nigerians in Europe’s second-tier interclub competition.
