“?”?The news is a massive blow to Tottenham, who face a big test of their Premier League title credentials when they travel to Manchester City on Saturday. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is said to have braced himself for a lengthy Vertonghen absence after the former Ajax defender was seen to leave the pitch in tears on Saturday.
Vertonghen will miss Spurs’ trip to Manchester City and the tie against Liverpool in February as his side look to reduce the current seven point lead currently held by Chelsea. Sources say Vertonghen is ‘devastated’ by the injury and its timing, having emerged as one of Tottenham’s top performers this season.
Pochettino must now consider whether to bring in Kevin Wimmer or Ben Davies as Tottenham’s third centre-back or revert to a flat back four, freeing up an attacking position. Heung-min Son could be drafted in to join the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen up front, with Eric Dier partnering Toby Alderweireld as the two centre-backs.
Spurs are currently second in the Premier League having won their last six games, including victories over Chelsea, Southampton and Burnley.
