“?Since Manchester United announced Jose Mourinho as their new boss in May, the initial influx of superstars the club had hoped to attract has failed to materialise.

Amid the lack of activity, “?Manchester Evening News have revealed exactly why Mourinho was unable to bring one of his key transfer targets to the club.

To date, the highly-rated Eric Bailly is the only new player through the doors at Carrington, signing a four-year-deal at the club.

“?”?The lack of transfer activity at Old Trafford is rumoured to have angered Mourinho, who favours signing his targets early in the transfer window.

Rumours have circulated that the Red Devils are close to signing the iconic talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic, available on a free transfer after the conclusion of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

Meanwhile Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been linked with the club, whilst Paul Pogba’s return to the club has also featured on the rumour mill.

Despite these links, one player the Reds have already missed out on is Portuguese wonder-kid Renato Sanches. The 18-year-old recently signed a deal with German champions Bayern Munich, despite being a primary target of the Old Trafford outfit.

Manchester Evening News have now revealed why Sanches’ move to Manchester failed to materialise, despite chief negotiator Ed Woodward visiting Benfica to watch the young star.

But I thought Renato Sanches and Breel Embolo were joining Manchester United?…

?

The report claims that the club refused to sign the player, prior to removing Louis Van Gaal as the manager of the club. This bizarre reasoning is because the Dutchman did not favour a move for the Portuguese.

Therefore by approaching the Benfica player, it would publicly undermine Van Gaal whilst he was still employed by the club.

Instead, United hesitated despite knowing Mourinho would replace Van Gaal in a matter of days, whilst in the meantime wonder-kid Sanches signed for Bayern Munich.
