Super Eagles and Standard Liege left wing back, Elderson Echiejile has said that missing the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) still hurts him.
The Africa Cup of Nations tournament kicks off in a matter of days and it’s no longer news the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be missing in action in the beautiful West African country of Gabon.
Echiejile, who was part of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2013 in South Africa, said though it still pains him that the Eagles won’t be part of the biennial tournament in Gabon, he has however promised to give his best to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2019 edition.
“Though I’m yet to recover from the non-qualification of the Super Eagles for the Nations Cup, I think we need to forge ahead and ensure we qualify for the next edition. We must do it for our fans who have been very supportive”, charged the former Sporting Braga defender who spoke exclusively to aoifootball.com.
The Eagles failed to qualify for the second time in a row, after finishing second behind Egypt and will want to point accusing fingers to the Republic of Chad who pulled out citing lack of funds to complete its round of matches, a situation that ensured points deduction from all the teams in the group and the eventual non-qualification of Nigeria.
Echiejile is currently with Standard Liege on a mid-season tour of Spain.
