“?Sunderland defender Papy Djilobodji is has been formally “?charged with violent conduct by the FA and is now facing a retrospective ban following an altercation with West Brom midfielder Darren Fletcher during Saturday’s defeat at the Hawthorns.

Djilobdji clashed with Fletcher in the closing stages of the game and was seen to raise his hands to the face of his opponent. The incident went unseen by the match officials at the time, although referee Craig Pawson did address both players after it happened.

Sunderland have until 6pm on Tuesday to respond to the charge.

FA rules “?dictate: “Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite officials.

“Each panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence. For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous.”

Should Djilobodji be found unanimously guilty, which looks likely, an earlier suspension for his dismissal against Hull already this season will mean he is hit with a four-game ban.

That would rule the Senegalese defender out of the upcoming fixtures against Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Everton, and he wouldn’t be eligible to return until March.
