Former England international Stuart Pearce has stated Spurs should attempt to sign Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, who is reportedly on the verge of signing for north London rivals Arsenal, in an interview with the Alan Brazil Sport“?s Breakfast show.
The 29-year-old is currently on international duty with England finalising preparations ahead of their Euro 2016 opener against Russia this Saturday.
But his own personal preparations will have been disrupted after Arsenal reportedly activated his £22m release clause despite Leicester’s reluctance to see their star man go.
There have been reports of personal terms being discussed between both parties but it is understood the England international is torn between staying at the King Power Stadium or leaving for pastures new.
But the £22 million clause inserted in his contract is only available to clubs that will be playing in the Champions League next season, meaning like Arsenal, rivals Spurs are also in a position to potentially open up talks with the former Fleetwood Town forward.
It is an idea former Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce believes will not only benefit Mauricio Pochettino’s men but also disrupt Spurs’ immediate competitors.
He said: “I wouldn’t be against it [signing Vardy], if I was Spurs. It nullifies your competitors as well as adding to your own squad. I think it would be a good idea.”?
Spurs and Pochettino are understood to be in the market for a striker to ease the burden on star striker Harry Kane with the Argentinian being reported on numerous scouting missions watching the likes of Southampton’s Shane Long and Netherlands international Vincent Janssen.
Kane made over 50 appearances last season and scored 25 league goals to help Spurs to a third place finish but Pearce believes such an impressive season will be hard to replicate if they don’t bolster their attacking ranks.
“Spurs, I’m not sure [about for next season],”? the former England u-21 boss said.
“They are reliant on Harry Kane. He has to score 20 goals a season for Spurs to do well. If Spurs go into the transfer market and bring two or three top notches in, you’d really sit up and listen to their credentials.”?
