“?New Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has declared that he is not the person responsible for Old Trafford legend Ryan Giggs leaving the club, revealing that ‘manager’ was the only role the 13-time Premier League champions wanted were he to stay.
Giggs formally brought his 29-year spell with United to an end over the weekend and Mourinho commended him for making the “brave” decision to actively pursue of managerial career.
“It’s not my responsibility that Ryan is not in the club. The job that Ryan wanted is the job the club decided to give me. It’s not my fault,” Mourinho explained.
“Ryan wanted to be Manchester United manager. And the club decided the job was for me.”
Drawing on his own experience of being an assistant to Louis van Gaal at Barcelona with the security of two further years on his contract , Mourinho wished Giggs all the best in his new journey into the unknown.
“From this moment, Ryan wants to be a manager,” he said. “Like, 16 years ago, I decided myself that I wanted to be a manager. For many of us, we start as assistant coaches and reach a point where we make a decision. And Ryan has made his decision.
“He could have been whatever he wanted in the club. The club wanted to give him any job, any important job. He made a decision where you need to be brave – 29 years is not 29 days.”
Mourinho also confirmed he would always respond positively should Giggs ever choose to return in the near future, or if the board asks his opinion on the subject.
“If one day, he wants to come back while I’m here, I will never stop him. If, one day, the club offers him the chance to be manager, I think it will be natural and a consequence of his success,” the Portuguese commented.
