Portugal’s Saturday night Euro 2016 clash with Austria was a poor affair on the whole, but it made for one of the tournament’s talking points.
“?Making his 128th appearance ‘Ronnie’ broke the legendary Figo’s appearance record for the Portuguese national team, however Cristiano endured a torrid time on his special night.
Missing chance after chance, Ronaldo thought his moment had come after being hauled down in the penalty box. The occasion surpassed the great man as he slammed his spot kick against the upright.
It went from bad to worse for the 31-year-old when he thought he had broken the deadlock, only to reel away as the offside flag was raised.
A miserable night for the Real Madrid Galactico, and all that was missing was the customary sulk when things haven’t gone the forwards way.
Instead, what followed was a moment that somewhat relieved Ronaldo of the pressure levelled at him following his remarks about Iceland’s playing style, and some poor performances of his own.
Ronaldo was approached by a pitch invader and the Portuguese star welcomed the man for a selfie, telling security to hold fire for the photo.
It was former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn however, who went viral following the selfie, making it clear that football has not always been quite as glamorous as Mr Ronaldo might think.
Very cool @Cristiano! Selfie after #PORAUT. Fortunately there weren’t any smartphone cameras when I was playing ? pic.twitter.com/CcPZi7nsJM
“?”?Whilst Kahn was thankful that technology was not quite the same when he was in the net, it’s almost certain that the German shot stopper would have looked right at home in front of the camera.
