NPFL’23: 3 points will be deducted for crowd violence – IMC Chairman

The Interim Management Committee of the Nigeria league through its chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye has stated that clubs will have three points deducted if found wanting for crowd trouble.

Elegbeleye was speaking on the plans of the committee for the league scheduled to start on the 8th of January, 2022 to veteran sport journalist, Mitchel Obi on the programme “Sport Salsa” in Kennis FM.

After emphasizing the reason behind the decision to have an abridged version of the league, the former Sunshine Stars chairman stated that arrangements have been made so that referees will be paid immediately in order to avoid past experiences of owing referees.

“We discussed with our sponsors that we don’t want to owe referees. We told to them give us the money from start to the end of the season, let the money he in the account. And ir any referee iwho is going to officiate a match, the morning of that day he will get alert, don’t give us the money give it to referees directly.”

He went ahead to reveal that there will be no fine for crowd trouble rather points will be deducted in order for the clubs to feel the pain.

And again any club that is found wanting with crowd violence will not be asked to pay money as usual, we will deduct 3 points from you so that the club will feel the pain.

Deducting three points from a club is the best way to instill discipline in our league”, He said.

Elegbeleye opined that the time has come for things to be done professionally in the league as it is called a professional league.
