NPFL UPDATE: Plateau Maintain Perfect NPFL Start

There was no doubt before the start of the Matchday in the NPFL as Plateau United continued their 100 per cent run with a 3-1 success over Sunshine Stars on Sunday.

Only Abia Warriors were the other team in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with an blemished run before Sunday’s fixtures but a 0-1 loss to a dramatic late penalty converted by Victor Mbaoma condemned the Umuahia club to their first loss of the season.

It was a different story at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos where table-topping Plateau United got off to a fine start with a late first half goal by midfielder Benjamin Turba after Sunshine Stars had Ayo Saka sent off for a second booking 26 minutes into the game.

Plateau United simply went into cruise control in the second half as Kabiru Umar and substitute Emeka Umeh scored a goal each to make it 3-0 before Kehinde Adedipe’s late goal for Sunshine Stars was too little, too late.

Kennedy Boboye’s Plateau United now sit pretty in top spot with nine points after three wins in three matches.

ABS moved into second place with a 1-0 win over Cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah. Chigozirim Metu scored the only goal of the game at the Kwara State Stadium in the first half.

Former champions Kano Pillars had to come from a goal behind to defeat 3SC 2-1. First half substitute Adamu Mohammed scored both goals to render Adigun Adewale’s 41st minute strike insufficient.

MFM put up a show at their Agege Stadium ground by dispatching Lobi Stars 4-0. Stephen Odey helped himself to a hat-trick, the first in this NPFL season, while Adegoyega Adekunle got the other goal.

One of the title favourites, Rivers United, were profligate in front of goal and could only manage a 1-0 victory against Niger Tornadoes. Ivorian forward Guy Kuemian Venance scored the goal on 20 minutes after good work by Lukman Mohammed to set him up.

Wikki Tourists, Katsina United and title holders Enugu Rangers all claimed nervy 1-0 wins over Akwa United, El-Kanemi Warriors and Nasarawa United respectively.

Former African champions Enyimba had to wait till the second half to see off a tough as nails Gombe United 2-0 through goals by Ibrahim Mustapha and Mfon Udoh.
