Bendel Insurance of Benin have emerged champions of the 2021/2022 Nigeria National League (NNL) season after winning the NNL Super 4 on Saturday.
Insurance were 2-1 winners against Doma United in the match day 3 fixture played at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenegoa.
A win which increased the points garnered by the Bendel Arsenal to seven points; three points better than the second place teams – El-Kanemi Warriors and Bayelsa United.
In the round rubin tournament, the Edo base team had defeated Bayelsa United, drawn against El Kanemi and won today’s game to be pronounced champions.
In a delayed match due to rainfall, the Restoration Boys were the first to draw the first blood in the 40th minute of the game.
Austin Ogun rose above the Doma defence to head home Julius Emiloju’s cross for his second in the tournament.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Doma responded after poor communication from the defense of Insurance gave room for Joshua Enoch to volley into the net courtesy of a through pass from Clement.
The benin side were not going to end the tie with a draw as they pushed for the winner.
And in the 75th minute the needed goal came as Divine Nwachukwu charged forward to put the ball nicely for Ebenezer to tap it in.
The Edo club held on to the lead to win by two goals to one.
Meanwhile, in the first game of the day Bayelsa United won their third match of the competition against El-Kanemi Warriors.
The host of the tournament won by two goals to nil, but it was enough for a second place finish at the end of the tournament.
