Sanni Jamiu’s penalty secured all three points for Gateway United in a local derby clash against Stormers SC of Abeokuta in the 2021/2022 NNL week 16 fixture played at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.
Two changes were made to the squad that lost to Adoration FC on the road as Christian Samuel and Yahuza Bala returned to the lineup.
It was a hard fought win for the Toyin Ayinla’s tutored side who broke the deadlock in the 89th minute courtesy of Sanni Jamiu’s penalty after Salifu Haruna was fouled in the box.
After a goalless first half, both teams threw players forward in a pulsating second half, with Oronsaye James nodding straight at Salaudeen Tunde in the 70th minute and Haruna Salifu’s low effort narrowly wide off goal.
Stormers also had a chance in the 71st minute when Olalekan Ismail blasted a thunderous shot in the box but Araromi Ibukun tipped over the bar.
Super substitute Sanni Jamiu then produced a magical moment, striking the penalty to the far corner with Salaudeen Tunde rooted to the spot, which made the absolute difference as Gateway United brightened hope of leapfrogging Insurance at the top of the summit.
Meanwhile, Sporting Lagos FC were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Apex Krane.
Go-Round FC failed also to pick the maximum points at home after being held to a 2-2 draw by Crown FC of Ogbomosho.
Rovers FC and Bayelsa United also shared the spoils in Calabar (1-1) to complete the round fixtures for the group on Sunday.
