The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the early hours of Saturday celebrated former Super Eagles captain,
Mikel Obi on the occasion of his birthday via a post on its official Twitter page. “Happy birthday to former Super Eagles captain, Mikel John Obi.” NFF wrote.
The 36-year-old celebrant started his career on home soil featuring for Plateau United in the state of his birth, after being picked up by Pepsi Football Academy at the age of 12 due to his potential and talent on display.
In his playing days, Mikel was one of the most decorated African footballers, both home and abroad, having won a variety of titles for club and country over a sixteen-year period in his trophy laden career.
For club, his successes came while playing for Chelsea FC, having won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa Cup, the English Premier League, the English FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup for the Blues between 2006 and 2017.
With the national team, Mikel Obi was an integral part of the African Cup Of Nations title winning sqaud in 2013,
playing every minute in all six games, and registering two assists against Zambia in the group stages and Mali in the Semis, while getting cautioned only once through the tournament.
