The Impact restored their two-goal lead thanks to Piatti’s penalty kick in the 84th minute, and Thomas McNamara quickly answered for NYCFC a minute later.
Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard made his debut for New York City FC as a 69th minute substitute.
Elsewhere, former Ghana youth midfielder Gershon Koffie last the entire duration as Vancouver Whitecaps travelled to Seattle to thrash Sounders 3-0 on Saturday night.
