Aston Villa identified Jordan Rhodes as their main transfer target and they have had a huge offer of £10million turned down by Premier League side Middlesbrough.

According to reports in  The Sun, Steve Bruce offered Boro a guaranteed £6million sum that could potentially rise to £10m should the Scotland international trigger additional clauses in the deal following a move to Aston Villa.

Rhodes joined Middlesbrough during the last January transfer window and scored six goals – including an important 10 minute brace away to Bolton Wanderers – on route to helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League.

But the 26-year-old, who has proven prolific at Championship level, now finds himself out-of-favour on Teesside and is willing to drop back down in search of first team football.

The striker wasn’t even named in the squad ahead of Boro’s last Premier League outing against Watford and it is believed that chairman Steve Gibson will not let him go for any less than £12million.

Following today’s pre-match press conference ahead of Middlesbrough’s clash with West Ham, Aitor Karanka confirmed that Boro have received two offers for the striker.

“If the right offer comes in and he wants to leave then for sure.” The Spaniard said.

“The club has received two offers but they weren’t enough, so he’s here and training really well.”

Boro and Villa have already enjoyed transfer relations this season, and should the deal go through, it will be the fifth time in which the clubs have exchanged players during the 16/17 campaign.
