“?Arsenal are still keen to tie Mesut Ozil down to a new contract that would extend the German’s stay at the club beyond 2018, although the player himself is reportedly interested in a return to Real Madrid should the opportunity arise.
The Gunners paid a club record £42.5m to buy Ozil from Los Blancos in 2013, but talks to extend a contract that expires in 2018 are believed to have stalled again in recent weeks.
Arsene Wenger said in April that there was no rush over getting a new deal, for both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, sorted. Yet as the summer draws to a close and the new Premier League season quickly approaches still neither has signed on the dotted line.”
According to a report from SportBild, Ozil would be ‘immediately ready’ to head back to Madrid, with the German publication citing a ‘heart-association’ with the reigning European champions.
It is suggested that while Ozil remains satisfied at Arsenal, he has greater ambitions to win major titles – ambitions that he may not be able to achieve at the Emirates.
The Gunners broke their long trophy drought shortly after the World Cup winner joined, capturing the FA Cup in his very first season. The team then retained the trophy the following year, but Arsenal are still no closer to seriously challenging for Premier League or Champions League honours.
Last season as Real Madrid collected a second Champions League trophy in the three years since Ozil left, Arsenal were once again eliminated in the round of 16 after initially only scraping through the group stage.
Domestically, only a late season Tottenham collapse handed the Gunners a flattering second place finish in the Premier League.
