Manchester City's Pursuit of Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan Hangs on Surgery

“?Already ruled out of the Euro’s, Ilkay Gundogan won’t be picking up any international caps this summer. Instead, he’ll be nursing his knee-cap back to health. “?Manchester Evening News reports that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City will assess Gundogan’s potential move to the Etihad stadium once his knee surgery is completed without complication.

The £17m move was put into doubt when Gundogan suffered a knee-cap dislocation during training earlier this month, but it is understood that Pep is still keen to bring the playmaker to the Premier League. The wheels are in motion at Borussia Dortmund too, with the German giants giving the green light on letting the 24-year-old go.

The injury and its associated surgery is set to keep Gundogan on the sidelines for four to six months in order to make a full recovery, but this would still see Gundogan ready to play before January 2017 at the latest. This would still bolster Manchester City’s attacking midfield with the majority of next season to spare.

Manchester City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain has already held talks with Gundogan’s agent as he starts operating off of Guardiola’s list of targets. The incoming manager has also identified midfielders Paul Pogba and Toni Kroos as players he’d like to overhaul his midfield. There’s also a likelihood of Pep bringing Thiago Alcantara with him from Bayern.

There is even more room in midfield given that Yaya Toure is expected to leave the Etihad this summer after his agent claimed City are prepared to sell the Ivorian with a move to Inter Milan the latest in transfer speculation.
