Jose Mourinho Urges Paul Pogba to Forget £89m Price Tag and Just 'Play Football'

“?Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has urged world record signing Paul Pogba to put the £89m deal that brought him to Old Trafford out of his mind and just now concentrate on playing football and hitting his best form.

Pogba enjoyed a fine second debut in a United shirt against Southampton last month but has seen his level drop in the weeks since, leading critics to question both him and the club already.

For Mourinho, the £89m is no more of an outlay, relatively speaking, than the other Premier League sides (all 11 of them) who smashed their transfer records over the summer.

“I think there are clubs that paid 20, 30, 40 (million pounds), which is a bigger deal than what Man United paid for Paul because you make a relation between what you pay and the club revenue,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“You realise that other clubs paying 20, 30, 40 is a much bigger thing than what Man United did, and I just want Paul to forget that and to play his football.”

Mourinho makes a good point on Pogba: #MUFC paying £89m is similar to Leicester paying £29m or Palace paying £27m.

The United boss is also keen for people to remember that Pogba has not had the benefit of pre-season and started the campaign almost immediately after returning from a delayed holiday.

“Euro final, no pre-season, holidays, come back – it’s normal that in the first week he had the very good impact in the first game. It’s normal that after the first game he has a little decrease, but I am full of trust with him because I know the player he is,” Mourinho explained.

“I know that he is a very good guy with a lot of ambition, so the form will come naturally and will come with the team. The team improves, Paul improves. No problem.”

All eyes will be on whether Pogba and his team-mates can bounce back from successive defeats to Feyenoord and Manchester City when they travel to Watford on Sunday afternoon.
