Former Liverpool midfielder and current Sky Sports Pundit Jamie Redknapp claims Tottenham Hotspur are once again title contenders this season after an emphatic 2-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side on Sunday.
“?Speaking to the “?Daily Mail, Redknapp singled out Toby Alderweireld for an impressive start to the season for the north Londoners, citing the main target to be ‘winning the league’ this year.
He said: “They [Spurs] have the best defence in the league, led by Toby Alderweireld who has proved [to be] superb value for money.”
So far, Tottenham have conceded only three goals in 630 minutes of Premier League football this season with the former Liverpool target Alderweireld forming a strong partnership with fellow countryman Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the Spurs defence.
Spurs’ solid defence can also be attributed to the impact of summer signing Victor Wanyama from Southampton for a bargain fee of £11m. The defensive midfielder has slotted in well with Eric Dier in the centre of the Tottenham midfielder, and was rewarded with the ‘Man of the Match’ award against City on the weekend.
“?Heavily linked with Liverpool in previous years, Wanyama made a number of key interceptions, blocks and tackles to derail the likes of Aguero, Sterling and Silva at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
“?
“?In contrast, Redknapp’s former side Liverpool have let in 10 goals in seven Premier League fixtures – the worst defensive record from the top half of the Premier League table.
“?
“?Yet, many Liverpool fans argue that a defensive midfielder in the mould of Wanyama is still not needed to sustain an optimistic title challenge this season. Questions will surely arise as to whether the Merseysiders can continue their winning ways, whilst Tottenham have rekindled their impressive form from the majority of last season.
