“It’s a breath of fresh air” – Iheanacho speaks on goal and Leicester’s win

Iheanacho strikes from the spot

After scoring a goal to help his team move out of the relegation zone on Saturday Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho states Leicester City’s togetherness and fight was on the full display during the 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.

The Foxes had to come from behind on Filbert Way, trailing to a first-half Matheus Cunha goal before Jamie Vardy was tripped by José Sá inside the area. Iheanacho stepped up to convert a pressure penalty, drawing City level.

It remained that way until the final quarter of an hour, when Timothy Castagne latched onto a Victor Kristiansen cross to hand Leicester the lead and ultimately a potentially crucial three points.

Speaking to LCFC TV following full-time, the Nigeria international felt a mixture of relief and pride to assist City’s quest for points in Dean Smith’s first game in charge at King Power Stadium.

“It’s a breath of fresh air,” he stated. “We really dug in well to get the three points. We really worked hard to get them. We have a strong character and obviously when we went a goal down, we didn’t stop pressing, we didn’t stop playing.

“We kept going and kept pushing each other to get the goal. We are really happy, sticking together as a group, doing this together with everybody – the staff, the players and the fans. We’re all proud and hopefully we keep that form in the next game.

“I think it’s mixed feelings because obviously we haven’t won in a long time and I think this gives the fans hope, the Football Club hope and it gives everyone hope to keep supporting, because so many people had doubted about our qualities, our togetherness and our football, everything. But today we showed character to win the game.”

Leicester City will take on Leeds United on Tuesday at Elland Road as they continue their quest for survival in the league.
