“It Would Be Like Probably The Biggest Trophy I’ve Ever Held In My Life” – Onumonu

Super Falcons and Gotham FC striker Ifeoma Onumonu is eyeing the 2022 WAFCON trophy in Morocco, Nigeriasoccernet can report.

The California born Nigeria striker is one of 25 players named by coach Randy Waldrum for the tournament in Morocco from July 2, and one of nine Super Falcons players who will be making their first appearance at the tournament.

Onumonu who is excited about the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) while speaking exclusively to ESPN believed she can help Nigeria achieve their record 12th title in Morocco later this month.

Onumonu: “I can’t even wrap my head around it because I think it doesn’t feel like it will be real in the moment.”

“It would be like probably the biggest trophy I’ve ever held in my life and one of the biggest accomplishments that I’ve ever had in my life.”

Since it restarts as the Africa Women Nations Cup, Nigeria have won 9 of the 11 tournament with the remaining two going to Equatorial Guinea winning the other two.

Speaking on the two trophies the Super Falcons failed to win, Onumonu said:

“[We] lost it a few years ago, but the goal this year is we’re not allowing that to happen again. Especially with the quality of this team. It’s not a lie, I think that there is no African team that is better than Nigeria at this moment.

“So, I just can’t wait to start the competition and bring it home.”

Ifeoma Onumonu have scored three times for the Super Falcons in five appearances, two of which came in during a hard-fought qualifying game against Cote d’Ivoire, which propelled the Nigerians to Morocco. The other came in a friendly against Canada where the Nigerians came this close to a win before the Canadians claimed a 2-2 draw.

The Super Falcons will start their camping against South Africa’s Bayana Bayana who are also gradually becoming a force to reckon with in Africa’s Women football.
