Two first half goals off the foot of attacking midfielders, Joan Benedict and Prudent Ugoh proved decisive to hand favourites, Heartland Queens a back-to-back victory in the 2022 Imo FA Aiteo Cup.
The state mainstream women side made it two successive wins against non-league side, Imo Angels in the state final clash on Thursday at the Old Township Stadium in Owerri.
The hard fought victory ensured that the Owerri landladies will fly the flag of the state at the national finals as champions together with the vanquished and sister side, Imo Angels.
Heartland got stuck last time in the second round of the oldest and glamorous competition no thanks to a painful loss to the elite league side, Delta Queens at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, Benue state.
The victory is coming on the heels of Heartland Queens’ campaign in the 2021/2022 NWFL Championship holding at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state from June 12 – 19, 2022.
Already the Owerri side have been drawn in Group A alongside Beautiful Tours, Crystal Stars, Dannaz Ladies and Kwara Ladies.
Group A of the NWFL Championship has former Premiership sides, Dreamstar Ladies and Ibom Angels. Others are Honey Badgers, Royaltoms International FC and Oasis FC.
The group’s winners will gain promotion to the mainstream league, NWFL Premiership at the end of the seven-day football fiesta.
