Kano Pillars striker Gambo Mohammed has returned to Kano after he dramatically turned back from Istanbul, Turkey, on his way to Vietnam in respect of signing for a club there.

Gambo’s UK-based agent Eddie Nwafor disclosed that the player refused to continue his trip to Vietnam despite a further clarification about his entry visa to Vietnam in Turkey.

Pillars have equally expressed disappointment with the latest development concerning the striker.

“This is most unfortunate and baffling because we did everything to make sure Gambo traveled out of the country to try his luck overseas. We will most certainly probe into why he did not do so after he got to Turkey,” said Pillars spokesman Idris Malikawa.

Nwafor said this will be the second time he has been involved in a botched foreign transfer involving Gambo.

“In 2011, I took the same player to the same club in Vietnam and after a day’s training they liked what they saw, but in the end the transfer fell through. I lost money as a result,” he recounted.

“This time I had to involve his club and Ahmed Garba aka ‘Yaro Yaro’, who was a player I handled when he played in Denmark. They both gave me assurances that everything will go well because the player himself was keen on moving overseas.

“But when he got to Istanbul, he was stopped over his visa to Vietnam, but we were able to confirm to the officials via email that he has a valid visa to enter Vietnam, but rather than continue on his trip to Vietnam, he insisted on heading back home to Nigeria despite pleadings from many well-meaning people including his wife.

“He preferred to sleep at the airport in Istanbul for three days and then return to Kano.

“Another player who I worked with to move to Vietnam has since signed even after he had to go through Nairobi, Kenya, and Thailand before he got to Hanoi.”

Nwafor added: “Everyone who has been involved in this move, including the Pillars chairman, is confused and shocked.

“It’s not just normal.”

Gambo, who has been capped by Nigeria at full international level, has been at Pillars since 2006, but over the years he has scuttled transfers to Egypt and Turkey even when he only had to sign a contract.
