Ryan Fraser scored as he was handed his first Premier League start for Bournemouth since mid-September

Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser said a goal on his return to Premier League action was like “a mountain off his shoulders” after a spell out of the side.

The Scotland winger was recalled by Eddie Howe for the 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday and repaid his manager’s faith with a first-half goal.

“It’s been a tough, tough time for me being out,” Fraser told BBC Sport.

“But, before the game, the manager told me this was my chance so I knew if I had one on goal, I had to take it.”

Fraser made his first league start of the season since mid-September and put his side ahead just before half-time with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

“It was such a good feeling,” he told BBC Radio Solent. “Instead of being happy, I was more relieved.

“I needed that to get my confidence back and after a couple more games, I think I will be flying again.”

The 23-year-old hopes his performance against Southampton will pave the way for more starts in the weeks ahead.

The Cherries face trips to Crystal Palace and Manchester United, a home game against Liverpool and an EFL Cup last-16 tie at Chelsea before Christmas.

“I’m just going to take it as it comes,” he added. “I’ll be trying to get my goals up as I scored four last season and so far with one in the cup, I’ve got two this season.”
