Nigeria International defender, Calvin Bassey has continued to receive criticism following his poor showing in Ajax’s 6-1 heavy home loss to Napoli in the UEFA Champions League.
The Nigerian was signed from Glasgow Rangers this summer as a successor to Lisandro Martinez.
Freek Jansen, a Football Writer was quite critical of Bassey.
“It was a bad transfer window at the bottom of the line. Ajax has invested more than a hundred million, but against Napoli, there were only two purchases in the base,” says the Ajax watcher in the Pak Schaal Podcast. Bassey was one of those two.” Jansen said.
“With Bassey, you can already conclude that Ajax has paid the absolute top prize for him with €23 million. Given his current qualities, it would have made more sense to pay five to 10 million euros for him. He still has a long way to go when it comes to football. Maybe that will still happen.”
