Flamingos missed the opportunity to play their first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after losing 6-5 to on penalties Colombia on Wednesday afternoon, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.
Following a goalless scores after the regulation time, the Flamingos failed to progress to the final despite having a penalty advantage over their Colombia counterpart who lost their 3rd kick, eventually losing to them 6-5 on penalties.
In a game largely dominated by the Colombians, the Nigeria girls were lucky not to have conceded goals as goalkeeper Omilana called into actions on different occasions in the second half to ensure Flamingos remain in the game.
Like in the quarterfinal with a minute left on the regulation time, Omilana was substituted for Jiwuaku, Nigeria’s heroic goalkeeper who saved a penalty to send the team to the semifinal at the expense of the United States girls.
Although she saved one on the afternoon to give Nigeria the advantage, her effort ended up being fruitless as Edafe who should have sent Nigeria to the final missed the 5th Flamingos penalty kick.
The Flamingos will now play the loser of the second semifinal between Spain and Germany in the 3rd placed match.
