FC Ifeanyiubah go top of NPFL

Ifeanyi-Ubah-goalThe big game in NPFL’s midweek fixtures between MFM FC and Enugu Rangers ended in a 1-1 and FC Ifeanyiubah benefited from that to climb to the summit with 2-0 win over Plateau United.

Rangers began the match day on top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) standings and took the lead against MFM FC at the Agege Stadium in Lagos through Obinna Nwobodo’s individual brilliance on 36 minutes.

In Nnewi, FC Ifeanyiubah had put themselves in contention through Pascal Seka’s goal from the spot after 18 minutes against Plateau United and were sitting in second place at that moment behind Rangers in first place.

For MFM, it was the first time they would trail at home and they would have Stephen Odey to thank for his volleyed goal on 68 minutes which saved them the blushes of suffering a first-ever top-flight defeat at home.

FC Ifeanyiubah were, however, made to work hard by Plateau United who refused to die until Tamen Medrano popped up at the death to score an insurance goal for the Nnewi club to go top with 18 points, one more than Rangers in second place and two more than Abia Warriors in third.

Abia Warriors did the unthinkable by inflicting a first league defeat on Cup holders, Akwa United, at their fortress, the Nest of Champions in Uyo. Warriors won 2-1.

Goals for Abia Warriors by Ndifreke Effiong and Anthony Okemmiri cancelled out Kufre Ebong’s early strike for Akwa United.

Sunday Adetunji’s double took 3SC off the bottom-four and piled more misery on struggling new boys, Ikorodu United, who have now suffered six league defeats on the bounce.

Rivers United continued their resurgence by edging El-Kanemi Warriors by the odd goal. Nonso Okonkwo netted the winner just after the hour mark as the Port Harcourt side moved into fifth place.

Former champions, Kano Pillars, suffered a first league defeat to Giwa FC. It ended two-nil with David Sunday and an own goal by Jonathan Zikiye.

Lobi Stars and Wikki played out a 1-1 draw. Nanen Imenger’s spectacular overhead kick forced Wikki to share the spoils after Godwin Obaje had netted.

It was a four-goal spectacle at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja where Niger Tornadoes held Sunshine Stars to a 2-2 draw.

Ismaila Gata and Tasiu Lawal scored from spot kicks for Tornadoes while Okiki Afolabi and Dele Olorundare got Sunshine Stars’ goals.
