Akpom scored one in each half to take his league tally to 16 in the league and Paddy McNair added another as Boro stay third in the table.
Michael Carrick’s men are now 10 points behind second-placed Sheffield United thanks to a ninth win in 11 games.
Meanwhile the Championship top scorer, Akpom has scored 13 goals in 15 games under Michael Carrick.
