Southampton are closing in on the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard, sources have told ESPN FC.
Several Premier League clubs, including Everton, West Ham United and Watford have been linked with Vestergaard, but Southampton are set to win the race for his signature with the towering defender due for a medical on the South Coast on Monday.
Vestergaard was a member of Denmark’s World Cup squad but did not feature in the tournament in Russia.
The 25-year-old is highly-regarded in Germany after spending the past eight seasons there with Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen and Monchengladbach.
Southampton have been looking to bolster their central defensive options since selling Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool last January and 6-foot-5 stopper Vestergaard has emerged as their top target.
Vestergaard is now set to become Southampton’s third new signing of the summer, after Mohamed Elyounoussi and Stuart Armstrong.
