The National Committee for the funeral of Stephen Keshi was inaugurated Friday by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Solomon Dalung. The event was held at the conference room of Sports Ministry at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja. The former Nigeria coach died June 8.

However, release of funds for the takeoff of the committee has been a major concern, with the current liquidity squeeze in the Nigerian economic system being a concern, but sources say the Minister after inaugurating the committee has been working round the clock to ensure money is provided for the state burial. Pressure is also on the Edo and Delta state governments to make their contributions known for a befitting burial for the late soccer icon.

The minister had approved the constitution of the committee, which comprises family members, coaches, ex- internationals, football administrators, the media among others.

The committee is headed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Christian Ohaa, who will be assisted by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick.

Other members are Ambassador Joe Keshi, Emmanuel Ado, Jennifer Keshi, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, Augustine Eguavoen, Joseph Yobo, Fanny Amun, Austin Mgbolu, Mitchell Obi, Dr Mohammed Sanusi and Luka Mangset.

Chief Tonobok Okowa will represent Delta State while Prestly Ediagbonya is from Edo State. Prince Vincent Okumagba will stand in for the Nigeria Football Supporters Club while Brig-Gen U.O. Olatoye will represent the Nigerian Army. Ayodele Titus is from the Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps and a representative of the Nigeria Police.

Mrs Hauwa Kulu-Akinyemi will serve as secretary of the committee.

The body will be inaugurated at the conference room of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Federal Secretariat, Abuja at 10.00am.
