Bayern Munich wonderkid Renato Sanches has been crowned the winner of this year’s European Golden Boy Award, beating teammate Kinglsey Coman and Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford to the honour.
The 19-year-old has shot to fame in recent months having won the European Championships with Portugal before making a big money move from Benfica, to Bayern Munich in the summer for an initial €35m.
The teenager will be given the award in a ceremony on Monday evening after the organisers “?of the event, “?Tuttosport, announced the results earlier in the day.
The winner is chosen by 30 of Europe’s leading football journalists, who pick which young rising player has impressed the most over the last year. Previous winners of the award include Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero which demonstrates the calibre of the European Golden Boy title.
Young Manchester United sensation Rashford came agonisingly close to winning but will have to make do with being the runner up as he finished ahead of Frenchman Kingsley Coman.
The 18-year-old Englishman has burst onto the scene since scoring twice in his first team debut for Manchester United in their 5-1 thrashing of Midtjylland in the Europa League.
Rashford’s stock has continued to rise ever since, having been selected in the England squad for their infamous European championship campaign in the summer. Despite his tender age, the striker is currently keeping his club captain, Wayne Rooney, out of the United team which demonstrates just how far he has come since making his debut in February.
Although his United team have endured a difficult start to the season and were humiliated in their last match, losing 4-0 to Chelsea, Rashford can take solace from his 2nd place finish in the European Golden Boy competition.
Renato Sanches wins the Golden Boy award, with Marcus Rashford in 2nd. Meanwhile, Paul Pogba has been awarded the Golden Fraud award.
It will of course add even more pressure onto the young striker’s shoulders, but if he has shown us anything so far, then it’s likely to spur him on as he continues to develop into one of Europe’s top forwards in years to come.
