Bayer Leverkusen’s Chief Executive Officer, Simon Rolfes, has praised Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface, describing him as a “great baller” following his impressive performance in a Florian Wirtz-like role during the club’s recent match against VfB Stuttgart, Nigeriasoccernet.com can report.
Rolfes noted that Boniface’s ability to accelerate the game between the lines was vital to Leverkusen’s attacking play. He pointed out how the Nigerian forward effectively set up Patrik Schick, held up the ball, and contributed to progressing the attack.
“He can speed up the game between the lines. He did that really well in Stuttgart. He set Patrik [Schick] up well, held up the ball, but also brought it forward. That’s an important element for our game,” said Rolfes.
The Kicker magazine had drawn comparisons between Boniface and Wirtz, with Rolfes agreeing with their assessment, adding that the striker’s versatility allowed him to fill the creative role traditionally played by the German star.
“The Kicker magazine wrote that he filled Florian Wirtz’s role a bit—I saw it the same way. He also played as a second striker from a deeper position [for Union Saint-Gilloise] in Belgium,” Rolfes added.
Commenting on Boniface’s form, Rolfes highlighted his solid display against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16, as well as his standout performance against Stuttgart.
“He did alright [in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg] against Munich and really well in Stuttgart. Boni is undoubtedly a great baller.”
Boniface’s performances have been a key factor in Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking strength this season, and Rolfes’ praise reflects the Nigerian’s growing influence at the club.
