Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan has seen new contract talks with the club stall after making an unusual demand in negotiations with the Bundesliga runners up.
According to “?Kicker, the Arsenal and Chelsea transfer target wants a release clause to be activated if current boss Thomas Tuchel leaves the club over the course of his extended deal.
The Armenian has one year left on his current contract and has been a Premier League target for a number of months, after putting in a series of impressive performances under Tuchel over the course of the season. He’s reportedly concerned for his Dortmund future if Tuchel leaves the club for any reason, and would like the opportunity to leave should it happen.
However, Dortmund officials have been shocked by the demand and are unwilling to play ball, leaving talks at a standstill. It comes as a boost to the Premier League duo, who may anticipate that a deal will become easier to pull off this summer as a result.
With the year remaining on Mkhitaryan’s current contract and uncertainty over whether he could re-sign, Dortmund may be forced into a decision to cash in this summer – as the only other alternative could be to lose the attacking midfielder on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
The 27-year-old hit an impressive 23 goals in 52 appearances from midfield last season, and has been with the German outfit for the last three years. He initially turned down interest from Liverpool to join Dortmund for around £22m from Shakhtar Donetsk.
