Nigeria International defender Calvin Bassey was in action for Ajax Amsterdam against SC Heerenveen and appeared to have suffered an injury with 6 minutes of normal time left.
Ajax Amsterdam manager Alfred Schreuder has assured that the injury suffered by Calvin Bassey in the closing minutes of his side’s 5-0 rout of SC Heerenveen on Saturday is not expected to keep him out of the Champions League clash against Liverpool.
The Amsterdam club maintained their one hundred percent start to the season with Mohammed Kudus netting a brace of goals and Davy Klaassen, Kenneth Taylor and Brian Brobbey also on target
The Nigeria national teamer had to make way in the 84th minute due to discomfort but could not be replaced because Schreuder had used all the available substitutions.
According to Schreuder, the initial diagnosis made in the aftermath of the game is that Bassey has sustained a minor calf-related injury.
In quotes relayed by Ajax Showtime, Schreuder stated : “We were able to switch well. Maybe we switch the last player a little too early, but I thought we could do that.
“Fortunately, Calvin Bassey is not so bad. It was a kick in the calf, so that’s not too bad.”
Schreuder added at the post-match press conference : “He (Bassey, ed.) said it’s no problem.”
Bassey is considered a key figure in the Ajax Amsterdam side, having started five consecutive matches in all competitions for the Dutch champions.
Ajax are scheduled to take on Liverpool at Anfield in their second group match of the Champions League on Tuesday, September 13.
