Aiteo Cup: Awka Angels Withdraw From Tournament

Mass withdrawal has trailed this year’s Aiteo Cup and like we’ve seen in the last few days, another club gas withdraw from participating in the tournament, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Anambra Awka Angels have notified the Nigeria Football Federation of its withdrawal from the tournament stating the following reasons:

“We regret to inform the Anambra Football fraternity, the entire Anambra Sports hemisphere, our teeming fans and supporters of our withdrawal from the 2022 Aiteo Federations Cup owing to paucity of funds to continue in the biggest and oldest football competition in the land.

“Earlier on, we qualified to feature in the Round of 32 against FC Robo Queens of Lagos after defeating Female Machines of Ogun State 2-0 at the Akure Stadium last Tuesday. At the moment we are not able to raise a minimum sum of Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N350,000) needed for our trip to Warri for our Aiteo Federations Cup match on Monday, 1st August 2022 which will cover hiring of vehicle, accommodation (for 18 players and 4 officials), feeding (18 players and 4 team officials) and other mandatory match logistics.

“We however acknowledge the financial supports we got from the following public spirited individuals and sports afficionados: Reverend Fr. Coach Obinna Dike (Chairman, Anambra Independent Football League); Mr. Chijioke Onyedika (Secretary, Anambra State Football Association); Mr. Chekwube Ofili (Chairman, Awka South Local Football Council); Evangelist Obi Muoneke (Proprietor, Peace FC); Engr. Dr. Ikenna Nwokedi (Lecturer, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and Sports Journalist) and School Manager, Saint John of God Secondary School Awka, Reverend Fr. Chigozie Jidere.

“We regret the effect of our latest action on the entire Anambra Football Community and our supporters. Please accept the assurances of our sporting regards.”

The lack of financial backing and insecurities as well as preparation for continental engagement are reasons given by some other clubs who have also withdrawn from the tournament.
