Ahead of the Super Eagles 2023 AFCON opener against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on Thursday, captain of Nigeria, Ahmed Musa has assured football fans across the nation of nothing short of victory in the game, Nigeria Soccernet can report.
Speaking to the Press on Wednesday ahead of the game, Musa who believed the team failed the fans during the last World Cup qualifiers said they are ready to make atonement for their past failures starting with the game against Sierra Leone on Thursday.
“The last game we played in Abuja was very sad for everyone. For me, myself, it was a very tough moment, there was nothing we can do. It’s football and there’s nothing we can do about it,” he said
“We will make Nigerians proud again. Nowadays, nobody cares about the Super Eagles because of what happened during the World Cup (qualification), we just have to keep pushing for them to believe in us again,” he added.
Musa also downplayed fears of the possibilities of a shocking result happening as the team will be playing without fans claiming it is something Eagles players are used to.
“Playing in an empty stadium we are use to that because during COVID we played almost one-and-half year without the fans,” Musa said
“Even in an empty stadium we have to give our fans what they want and win their confidence back so definitely we have to do all our best to win tomorrow,” he concluded.
The game between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone will come up on Thursday by 5pm local time at the Moshood Abiola Stadium Abuja.
