AFCON 2023: Cameroon scale through to set up round 16 tie with Nigeria

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will be Nigeria Super Eagles opponents in the round of 16 after a hard fought victory over Gambia in their last group stage game in the African Cup of Nations on Tuesday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Cameroon edged the Gambia 3-2 to finish second in group C after Senegal defeated Guinea 2-0, finishing with better goal difference to Guinea.

A cagey encounter in the first half which ended goalless came alive with a dramatic last 10 minutes.

Karl Toko-Ekambi opened score in the 56th minute to give Cameroon the lead  to kick start a pulsating match.

Gambia equalised in the 72nd minute through Ablie Jallow while Ebrima Colley’s feet scored what seemed a perfect comeback.

However, the spectators were in for a breathtaking end as Cameroon equalized straight away with an own goal 2 minutes later.

It was Cameroon who turned the game on its head as Christopher Wooh scored a header from a resulting corner 1 minute after 90 minutes to send the Central African fans to a frenzy.

The goal gave Cameroon their first 3 points of the tournament as set up a tie with Nigeria in the round of 16.
