Former Super Eagles Ogbonna Kanu has revealed that the performance of Victor Osimhen and other Nigerian stars in Europe this season may prove beneficial for Nigerian football and an opportunity for young talents in the Country.
Kanu said the exceptional performances of Nigerian players across Europe will turn the attention of scouts to Nigeria, as it was many years ago.
“Osimhen is making the efforts where we have big big strikers that are doing well in Europe, the world is watching him and his performance has drawn attention back to the National team and Nigerian players,
and it is pleasing to see that these players, wherever they play, are doing well as well,” the former Right Back said
The former Ajax and Portsmouth full back further argued that football has changed a lot from his time as they are was a clearer path to European clubs through U17 and U20 tournaments.
He also suggested that including more home based players in the Super Eagles will help the local players with opportunities to play abroad.
“Football has changed in many ways compared to when we used to play. Back then, scouts usually come to Nigeria to fetch good players for tournaments, particularly when you do well in a tournament at the Under 17 and 20 levels.
“Clubs look into the players and pick the exceptional ones, it’s not the same now and it’s not the Players’ fault. Even technology has changed and it’s affecting a lot about the game.
“There are very good players wherever you go today in Nigeria, they are doing well, but the opportunities aren’t readily available like before.”
“We have to put the home based players alongside the foreign players like we used to do before to merge them, so that they can have opportunities to play abroad
