Gift Orban signing was a gamble – KRC Genk Chief

The chief executive of Belgian football club, KRC Gent, Michel Louwagie admitted it was a risk on the club’s side signing Nigerian player Gift Orban from Stabæk Fotball Club during the January transfer window, Nigeriasoccernet.com gathered.

The departure of Paul Onuachu to Southampton left KRC Genk with no choice but to look for an immediate replacement and that led them to the European clubs toast of the moment, Gift Orban.

Speaking about the signing of the young talented Nigerian, Michel Louwagie as quoted by BBC said:

“The price was supposed to be lower, but it went up after David Datro Fofana was sold from Molde to Chelsea for 12m euros (£10.5m).

“It was a risk, but head of recruitment Samuel Cardenas kept telling me every day that we absolutely must sign him.

“From the first time I watched Gift, I saw something special in him. His movement is exceptional, he is complete in the sense that he can combine and score in every way technically.”

Gift Orban has scored 9 league goals for KRC Genk in 8 Belgian Pro League appearances. He’s scored 5 in the Conference League including the fastest hat-trick of the competition in 3 minutes when KRC Genk eclipse Turkey’s Basaksehir in the last 16.
