Despite recent performances, former Ajax player, Marciano Vink, has faith in Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey but the midfielder insists Bassey needs to improve so that he can fit into Ajax’s playing pattern.
Bassey moved from Glasgow Rangers to Ajax Amsterdam in a deal worth €23million, replacing Lisandro Martinez who left for Old Trafford, Manchester during the summer.
Since he arrived in Amsterdam, Bassey has been decent, helping Ajax keep clean sheets in their opening five games of the season.
However, the Dutch champions have been poor in recent weeks. Ajax have lost three of their last four games, including a 6-1 demolition at home to Osimhen’s Napoli summed up their despicable form in the last few weeks.
The center-back pair of Bassey and Jurrien Timber is yet to sync in recent games, as they have conceded eleven in their last four.
Vink believes that Bassey could improve, and fill the void ade by the departure o Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez.
“I believe that Bassey is very strong and that he is powerful in the duels. But at Ajax, something more is demanded, especially if you want to play a constructive game,” Vink said as per Ajax Showtime.
Despite the setbacks, Bassey would hope that his side gets back into their groove and start picking up wins quickly.
Ajax travel to Volendam this weekend before they fly to Italy to take on Napoli in the second leg of their Champions League clash.
