Nigeria U20 girls Falconets bow out of the Costa Rica FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in the early hours of Monday, Nigeriasoccernet.com can report.
Following their stellar performances in the group stage where the Nigerian dominated, winning all their games and conceding just once, many tipped them to go all the way to the final but the game against Netherlands is one which looks dicey.
The girls picked from the first minutes dominating their European counterpart but couldn’t get the needed goal before falling behind in the 11th minutes.
They continued the press for an equaliser after conceding the early goal but lack of composure in the final third kept them trailing until the 2nd goal came out of no where for the Netherlands in the 33rd minutes.
An heartbreaking one it was for the Falconets and all attempts to reduce the deficit before the break proved abortive.
The Dutch curtailed the Nigerians and kept them at bay from penetrating their 18-yard box in the second half and despite the arrays of attack launched by the Africans, they couldn’t beat Alkemade (the Dutch goalkeeper) at the end of the 90 minutes.
The Netherlands will now face Spain who defeated Mexico by a lone goal in one of the semifinals.
