The number of Nigerian players plying their trade in Belgium will Likely swell in the coming days as Standard Liege are closing in on signing 20 year old Nigerian forward David Okereke from Serie B side Spezia.
Okereke was widely tipped to follow in the foot steps of Sadiq Umar who moved from the Serie B side to Italian giants Roma but his career dwindled a bit after scoring the winner in an Italian Cup game against Udinese.
After scoring the goal two years ago, many expected him to build on it as it was his first professional goal but that wasn’t the case as he struggled for game time before exploding last season while on loan at Serie C side Cosenza.
He led the un-fancied Cosenza to promotion with his goals in the final play off double header against Trapani proving decisive. He was on target in both legs played on the home and away basis and that caught the eyes of Standard Liege.
German side Mainz 05 are also in for him but in the main time, Standard Liege are still the favourite to sign the Abuja Football Academy graduate for a fee less than €300,000 according to reports gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com.
