“?In a move which would placate many irritated spectators of the game, the “?Times have revealed that the FA are finally investigating the possibility of punishing simulation in football with retrospective bans for guilty players.

Numerous moments of simulation have been spotted recently, including Sunday’s meeting between Manchester United and Liverpool. Roberto Firmino pushed Ander Herrera in the chest after an incident in the closing minutes, but Herrera dropped to the floor clutching his face.

Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp were seen arguing furiously after the event, and Klopp certainly had a case to be angry about. Simulation includes overreacting in order to invite punishment for the opponent as well as diving.

The Scottish FA brought in legislation in 2011 on the subject, which reads as follows:

“No player shall cause a match official to make an incorrect decision and/or support an error of judgment on the part of a match official by an act of simulation which results in that player’s team being awarded a penalty kick and/or an opponent being dismissed and/or any other substantial advantage being gained.”?

The rule leads to a player being banned for two games if breached. FA Chairman Greg Clarke and other officials are in favour of the move, and are in connection with the Scottish FA to discuss how the rule is working out in their leagues.

Herrera is not the only player under accusation of wrongdoing; Hull’s Robert Snodgrass dived to win a penalty against Crystal Palace, and Dele Alli appeared to do the same against Swansea. It is about time that it came to an end.
