“?Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on 18-year-old right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold who impressively stood in for Nathaniel Clyne in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The youngster was almost part of a defence that kept a clean sheet, but Liverpool were denied by a Zlatan Ibrahimovic header with just six minutes remaining.

But Klopp revealed he was pleased with the team’s display as a whole, particularly that of Alexander-Arnold.

Asked about the teenager’s performance, he told “?Liverpool’s official website: “Nice, eh? It was clear in the beginning. Then you see [Anthony] Martial, one of the quickest players in the Premier League, in the first two situations it was difficult and he needed a little bit of time to adapt.

“But then he did brilliantly. All the boys like him and so they wanted to help him. The decision was not that easy.

“The first impulse if Clyney can’t play is Millie on the right and Alberto [Moreno] left “? but I didn’t want to change two positions because of one injury.

Trent Alexander-Arnold should be very proud. Thrown into the heat of battle and handled the occasion superbly. Got a big future. #LFC

“I knew, with a new system, with a diamond which we played, to change both full-backs, I didn’t feel too well [about]. We didn’t have to be too brave to bring him, we thought he was ready for it and he proved it.”

Klopp also reserved praise for midfielder Emre Can, adding: “He did well, absolutely, but that’s what I expect from him.

“This is his quality. You cannot be surprised when he has a good game and you should not be surprised when he sometimes has an average game, because he’s still a young player, but that’s his level and what he has to show.”
