Watford have confirmed the signing of Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley on a six-month loan deal, with a view to signing the England international on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

The former Manchester United man should be available for the Hornets’ clash with Middlesbrough this weekend, with Watford expected to release the details of his move on Friday.

Confirmation of the move came just minutes after the Toffees announced the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United in a move worth up to £24m, leaving even fewer first-team opportunities for the 27-year-old.

Cleverley will not be a stranger to Watford’s stadium or training ground, with the centre midfielder having plied his trade in Hertfordshire on a season-long loan from United back during the 2009/10 season.

The Basingstoke-born footballer also had a season-long loan spell at Aston Villa during the 2014/15 campaign, as well as enjoying a temporary switch to Wigan Athletic, but returned to Old Trafford the following summer to be told that he was surplus to requirements and would not handed fresh terms to remain in Manchester.

He joined Everton on a free transfer in the summer of 2015, and quickly became a firm favourite under former Latics boss Roberto Martinez, the man who had coached him at Wigan previously.
