“?Bayern Munich captain and former Germany international Philipp Lahm has hinted that he could call time on his playing career and retire as soon as 2017. That’s a whole year earlier than previous estimates of when he would hang up his boots for good.

Lahm, a seven-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern, spoke in January and September of 2015 as well as other occasions about his intention to retire at the end of the 2017/18 season.

His current Bayern contract is due to expire in June 2018 when the versatile defender will be 34 years of age, but now he’s once more refused to rule out calling it a day a full 12 months sooner having also teased 2017 as a possible retirement date in the past.

“I would not rule it out,” he told Bild when the subject of 2017 cropped up again this week.

“This idea has not changed. I want to be able to measure myself at the highest level and find the right time to end my career,” he explained.

Lahm walked away from international football in 2014 shortly after lifting Germany’s first World Cup as a unified nation and although he says that winning trophies this season won’t necessarily dictate when he chooses to end his club career.

“I’m not going to decide my future depending on winning titles at the end of the season,” he explained. “I will think of my body and will then decide how to go on.”
