Fc IfeanyiUbah also known as Anambra warriors have won the 2016 edition of the Federation Cup. The feat was achieved through a 5-4 penalty win over Nasarawa United after the game ended goalless at full-time.
Both teams who were playing in the final of the competition for the first time cancelled out each as they looked to win the trophy for the first time.
Bello Kofarmata came close to putting FC IfeanyiUbah ahead in the 23rd minute but his effort was parried into a corner kick by Nasarawa keeper Suraj Ayeleso.
Abdulrahman Bashir wasted a glorious chance three minutes before the break when he was teed up by Esosa Igbinoba as Nasarawa United upped the tempo in the closing stages of the first half.
Both sides adopted a cautious approach in the second half and the closest to a winner was when Philip Azango’s effort was saved by Uche Okafor in the dying moments of the game.
With the score goalless at the end of 90 minutes, penalty shoot out was needed to seperate both teams with FC IfeanyiUbah converting all five kicks and Seun Sogbeso, who scored Nasarawa United’s winning goal in the semi-final, having his kick saved.
The Anambra Warriors will now represent Nigeria at the continental level in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
