Algerian strikers plying their trade in Europe have with their current form sent a warning signal to the Super Eagles ahead of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers where Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia are in the same group.
The Eagles start their campaign away to Zambia on October 9 and would after that game return home to face Algeria in two weeks time.
In Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League games, the Algerian duo of Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani were in fine form for reigning EPL kings, Leicester with Mahrez scoring a brace in the Leicester 3-0 bashing of Club Brugge away in Belgium.
Marc Albrighton scored Leicester’s first goal after just five minutes of action before Mahrez hammered home a superb free-kick in the 29th minute.
Mahrez completed his double from the penalty-spot following a foul on Jamie Vardy. Slimani on his part lasted 62 minutes on his Leicester City debut having signed for the Foxes from Sporting Lisbon. Another Algerian striker, Yacine Brahimi was also in action for FC Porto who was forced to a 1-1 draw at home by FC Koebenhaven.
Algeria would start her World Cup qualifiers campaign with a home game against Cameroon. Algeria going by the latest FIFA ranking released yesterday is now Africa’s number two country behind Cote D’Ivoire.
The Desert Foxes had in their last game at home defeated Seychelles by 4-0 to land in Gabon for next year’s AFCON in grand style.
