Juventus chief Giuseppe Marotta has revealed that the reason behind selling Paul Pogba to Manchester United this summer”? was purely based on the player wanting a ‘new adventure’.

The Frenchman left the Serie A giants for a staggering £89m to make a sensational return to Old Trafford after leaving the club in 2012 searching for first team football, and despite desperately wanting to keep hold of the midfielder, Marotta has suggested that the player was keen to move on.

According to the club’s official website, via the “?Daily Star, Marotta said: “We’d always maintained that we did not want to sell Pogba given his importance to the team, the club and the supporters.

“But once he had decided to embark on a new adventure at Manchester United it became difficult and indeed impossible to keep him, so we allowed him to fulfil his wish of moving on.

“At Juventus, we’ve always believed that the destiny of a player remains their own choice either to remain or leave the club.”

Despite losing such an influential figure in the side, the squad was bolstered by the £79m purchase of striker Gonzalo Higuain from Italian rivals Napoli. However, Marotta has denied that these two deals were connected, and that the club were always looking to bring in new faces.

“It’s our job to keep reinforcing the squad year on year,” said Marotta, “and we had always planned this summer to bolster Juve’s forward line.

“One of our transfer targets designed to do just that was Higuain.

“The fact that we bought him at a time when Pogba was set to leave was purely coincidental.”
