Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has declared his love for the city and their supporters after seeing their ‘non-stop fight for justice’ following the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989.

The German manager became an instant hit with the Anfield faithful after replacing Brendan Rogers in October last year.

But according to Klopp, he was the one that loved Liverpool before Liverpool loved him, due to the resilience shown following the Hillsborough disaster, which killed 96 innocent Liverpool supporters.

“?”I love this city for what they did in the 27 years after Hillsborough,” Klopp told ESPN

“The non-stop fight for justice, the way they all stuck together. At the memorial, I heard Evertonians talking about it and how they were affected and the respect that exists.

“You know, it’s easy to say it’s only football, but here there is so much more behind it.”

In April, 27 years after the disaster, Liverpool Crown Court ruled that the supporters were the victims of unlawful killing, quashing the original verdict of accidental death.

Citizens from around Liverpool rallied in support of the victims’ families, which led to Klopp hailing the ‘unity’ in the city.

“In such an awful tragedy, we saw so much unity in a city like Liverpool,” added Klopp.

“I don’t think that’s something to take for granted. There are many other places where it would not happen. That’s one of the things that makes this city special.”

Liverpool continue pre-season proceedings on Tuesday, when they face Serie A side AS Roma in St Louis.

Roma will hope to make some progress with their “?pursuit of Reds defender Mamadou Sakho, who was sent home by Klopp after missing a flight and subsequent training session.
